Setting up a low maintenance organic garden

This workshop is a practical day with lots and lots of information for people who want to setup their own low maintenance, organic garden. Bring your notebook because there are sooo many fun facts! Like: did you know that fireflies live in dead wood and the larvae eat slugs? So there is a good reason to mark your beds with rotting wood!

Date: Wednesday 5 June 2024 or
Wednesday 4 September 2024
Time: 10:00 - 17:00
Teacher: Barbara Scheltus
Venue: the gardens of permaculture farm Bogata Šuma in Croatia

What are the steps in setting up a working ecological garden? How do you do that?

Step 1: find the right spot

Before we designed our garden here at Bogata Šuma, we searched for the best spot. Observe your land! Where does the wind come from in summer, in winter, where does the snow stay a bit longer, how does rain run off, what animals visit your garden...

Step 2: Design your garden

Why designing? Because it is (fun and) easier to prevent mistakes than to repair damage.
With a design on paper you can oversee the whole. You can also plan in detail when & where you plant what, what goes well together (companion pants) and how much plants you need for your space.

Step 3: Cheap and lazy preparation of garden beds

The first thing that we did, was finding the more flat spots and cover them with newspapers and cardboard. We put logs around to mark the beds and to keep the cardboard in place. On the cardboard we put potatoes, covered with mulch.

Over time, these layers killed the grass and the weeds (because they didn't get any light), and decomposed.

Year round vegetables

Bogata Suma's garden feeds us all year round with fruits, vegetables and herbs. When we store the harvest well, we have plenty.

Our garden is based on permacultural principles. The general idea is that we have less work and a big yield. Big in variety and enough to feed us and our volunteers. It is a no till polyculture garden, mulched with straw from the rabbits, where plant combinations help each other in their ecological community. We use crop rotation, cover crops and compost.

Protect your veggies

Around the garden we are growing a hedgerow with all sticks from pruning trees. Decomposing sticks into beautiful soil is one of the many functions of this type of fence. There are all kinds of berries growing in it, the wood wall creates a micro climate, it is a gigantic insect hotel, hedgehogs and lizards live under it, it slowly decomposes and gives us beautiful soil while protecting the garden from deer, wild boar and camping guests.

Other ways of protecting your greens is to plant companions with them. Horseradish against diseases, nasturtium to distract bugs, garlic to repel...

Or keep them so healthy that bug-infestations don't get a chance. We use home made liquid fertilizers for that, and effective micro organisms. We will make a fertilizer together so you can see how easy and effective it is.

Food forest or "forest garden"

How cool is it to grow your food, herbs, medicine, flowers, dyes, and even soap in a low maintenance forest! Bogata Šuma's almost mature food forest (since 2015) is an area with layered growth, like berry shrubs under fruit trees, thyme and wild strawberries on the ground, edible and medicinal flowers next to it...

We will show you how we have set up this low maintenance food growing system.
